The House at Tilford Gardens
On Wednesday 25 May 2016 the Beech Gardeners visited Tilford Cottage Gardens, south of Farnham on a fairly cloudy but fine day. The owner of the gardens, Rod Burn, met us at the start and gave us a plan of the gardens which led down to the River Wey. At Tilford the two branches of the River Wey meet and then go on towards Godalming where it is navigable. The plan showed there were Japanese and Water gardens, wild flower riverbanks, formal planting, sculpted hedges, garden sculptures by Rod Burn himself, and his studio of paintings, photography and glass fusion. His wife had a holistic therapy centre in the garden too.
After wandering around the gardens for an hour or so looking at the topiary, the sculptures, the rose, apple and willow arches, the mysterious paths down to the little bridge over the river, the vegetable garden, the greenhouse, the glass making studio where our host made all the glass panels etc scattered around the garden – we found our way to the patio beside the conservatory for tea and cake. The lady of the house had made four cakes for us, lemon drizzle, carrot cake, chocolate cake and a Victoria sponge – delicious.
