A veritable “Persian Carpet” of Dahlias !!
The Beech Gardeners visited Gilbert’s Dahlias just outside Romsey on Wednesday 7 September to see the amazing “Dazzling” Dahlia field in all its glory.
Twelve of us gathered at the Village Hall at 1.00 pm and drove in 3 cars to Romsey. As we drove south west the clouds melted away and we had glorious sunshine (and hot hot hot) for the remainder of the day. At risk of being boring, and hoping it doesn’t look too much like a dahlia catalogue, the author photographed all that she liked – they are all displayed below in the gallery. It wasn’t until she got to K and L that she realised that they had all been planted alphabetically (Doh!!) This is not all of them – the owner, Nick Gilbert, who welcomed us and gave us a very thorough potted history of the place, said that there were over 400 varieties of dahlia in the field. Including all his cuttings etc he is growing over 1500 different plants. He also has another field he is developing.
After a very hot wander round the dahlia field we gathered in the shade for a cup of tea and some home made cake – delicious. We had to choose from coffee and walnut, Victoria sponge, lemon cake, lemon drizzle and fruit cake – difficult choice. They were all made by the lovely young lady who served us.
