BGs’ Hillier Gardens report June 2015 – by Helen Lamb

On the evening of Wednesday 3rd June 33 Beech Gardeners, including a few friends, went to the private entrance of world famous Hillier HQ, for a tour of part of the gardens guided by Woolfgang Bopp, Director. Again, the weather was kind and the gardens gave inspiration and joy. Here he is on the left discussing the Bamboos.
As with all gardens, different seasons reveal their hidden treasures. I can’t wait to return to marvel in their gorgeous peonies, which were almost ready to explode. Hillier’s plans for creating gardens that replicate countries from around the world will keep visitors new & old delighted, I’m sure!
Ferns and bubbling stream
Not only did Woolfgang inform us on certain plants & trees but he also told us of the history of Hillier. On the right is a bubbling stream with ferns and water plants.
He took us up & down the undulating grounds and showed us a religious stone Gurka memorial which many Gurkas have visited and loved – see below left.

We finished off the evening with a welcome glass of wine and crisps in Sir Harold Hillier’s lovely old home, Jermyn’s House.
